This week I have been monitoring a few stories which all link together really nicely, with respect to the continued growth in Mobile Applications and developer education.
Here are the stories I have been tracking...
- Jeanette Der Bedrosian, USA TODAY wrote about... "An iPhone Developer University Program launched last fall, however, allows qualifying colleges and universities to produce iPhone apps at no cost, spurring several institutions to offer a course in the technology. Apple declined to comment on the number of schools participating, but they include Stanford and NJIT". Check out the full story here
- Maggie shields, BBC News discussed... "The market for mobile applications, or apps, will become "as big as the internet", peaking at 10 million apps in 2020, a leading online store says.". Check out the full story here
- Neil Hughes, AppleInsider stated... "Acknowledging that there is room for improvement in the current offering, Apple chief executive Tim Cook said Tuesday that Apple is looking for new ways to categorize software in the App Store on the iPhone and iPod touch.". Check out the full story here
It is my belief that the level of Mobile Applications will increase... as Apple state, "there's an app for just about anything'" and it is the 'just about' that in itself is driving iPhone users to demand more! I also think that this increase, in the level of Mobile applications, will also drive an increase in the usefulness of each application.
I'm going to sound like a Grumpy Old Man and say that I will happily wave goodbye to a reduction in the numbers of the novelty applications.
As the iPhone picks up speed in the Enterpise especially through 3rd Party companies such as Sybase, I think we will see applications developed that put an even sharper edge on this most sought after device, turning it into the ultimate business weapon.
