GetFugu, Inc. (OTCBB:GFGU), the next generation mobile search tool, announced today that it has partnered with The Topps Company, Inc. (“Topps”), a leading producer of sports and entertainment trading cards. Topps, the exclusive trading card of Major League Baseball, is using GetFugu’s “See It, Say It, Find It, Get It” vision, voice and location recognition services to enhance the “Legends of the Game” cards in 2009 Topps Baseball Series 1, Series 2 and Updates and Highlights.
Utilizing GetFugu’s image recognition service, baseball fans who use their mobile device to capture an image of one of the enhanced cards will get additional information from the web relevant to that card. GetFugu’s application will send the individual to the player’s Wikipedia page, to the Topps’ online store or to Topps on Ebay.com to purchase classic Topps products.
“We are thrilled to be working with GetFugu on this new technology. Their mobile search and recognition technology enables our consumers to interact with trading cards in new and exciting ways and opens up new revenue opportunities for the future,” said Steve Grimes, Chief Digital Officer at Topps.
“Baseball cards have been a part of American culture for over 50 years. Collectors, both young and old, now have a mobile application to access information on baseball players with a click of a button on their mobile phone. We look forward to building our relationship with Topps and provide our services across other product lines in the future,” said Michael Solomon, Chairman of GetFugu.
Headquartered in New York, NY, The Topps Company, Inc. was founded in 1938 as Topps Chewing Gum, and in its early years produced a popular penny “Topps Gum” from a factory in Brooklyn, N.Y. After World War II, the company developed Bazooka Bubble Gum, and in 1950, added trading cards to its product line. Baseball cards appeared in 1951 and quickly became a vital part of pop culture, a tradition that continues to this day, and includes football (both American and European) and basketball, in addition to entertainment cards and stickers and albums. Topps is an international marketer of entertainment products, principally collectible trading cards, confections, sticker collections and collectible strategy games. Topps maintains offices in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy and Argentina, in addition to the U.S.
