OFC/NFOEC Expands Programming to Address Trends in Datacom

The leading conference for the optical networking industry, the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC 2012), taking place in Los Angeles March 4–8, has announced expanded programming and exhibitor participation to include greater emphasis on the growing role fiber optics technology will play in datacom, cloud computing and data center networking to meet bandwidth and power challenges.

The technical conference programming includes highlights such as a keynote address by Google’s Milo Medin, vice president, Access Services, who will address attendees on “Bandwidth, Optics and the Age of Abundance,” as well as workshops, technical paper presentations and panel discussions with industry leaders from Facebook, NEC Systems and Fujitsu, among others.

“Our industry is seeing a convergence of computing resources and communications infrastructure, which has resulted in an emerging area of optical communication applications driven by data centers and cloud computing,” said Keren Bergman of Columbia University, chair of the OFC/NFOEC subcommittee on Optical Networking, Technologies, and Applications for Datacom and Computercom. “At OFC/NFOEC this year, we are bringing together both vendors and systems providers to redirect the efforts toward these emerging applications in order to solve problems related to bandwidth and energy consumption.”

As the largest and most comprehensive international event for both the science and business of optical communications, this year’s OFC/NFOEC will host the entire scope of optical communications, providing technical and business programming, exhibits and other activities for all audiences from systems companies to service providers and carriers and equipment manufacturers. Datacom products and services will be well represented among the more than 500 exhibitors with participation from companies including Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena, Cisco, Ericsson, Fujitsu Network Communications, Google Fiber, Huawei, Infinera, Nokia Siemens and Juniper.

The complete OFC/NFOEC schedule is available online. A full list of key OFC/NFOEC datacom programming is available on the OFC/NFOEC website. Highlights include:

The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
