MeeGo was going to be the future, now it is just the past.

Here are today’s top mobile news and stories.

• The Story of Nokia MeeGo - MeeGo was one of the first touch operating systems that would resemble anything we know today. For a while, it was the most used mobile OS worldwide (and Nokia the largest smartphone manufacturer). With the advent of iOS and Android, this all came tumbling down, and the rest of the story follows. Via Taskumuro, more here.
• Clearest views of LG Nexus handset yet - it seems pretty clear that the next Android Nexus device will be created by LG. It appears to be a version of the LG Optimus 4, with a quad-core Snapdragon, 2GB of ram and a 4.7″ screen. Via The Verge, more here.
• Google’s Eric Schmidt claims 1B Android activations by next year - It was not long ago, that Android was wallowing with only 200k activations a day. According to Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, there are over 1.3M activations a day, and pretty soon there will be 1B total Android devices floating in the wild. Via SlashGear, more here.
• AppSurfer brings Android applications to the browser, can be embedded anywhere – development for traditional operating systems is slowing down. However, there is a startup out there dedicated to becoming the “YouTube of Android apps.” Mobile applications are simple, intuitive and inexpensive, it’s easy to imagine that given the opportunity, many users would choose them over Windows or Mac applications. • iFixit has torn down the iPod Touch 5G - and apparently it is impossible to fix by yourself. Not very surprising as Apple is dedicated to a 2-year consumer refresh cycle, but to those who are hard on their toys, this might be a toy they skip. I’ll be honest, I was interested in the iPT5, but am disappointed personally by the price and the pared-down specifications from the iPhone 5. Via 9to5Mac, more here.
• Sortable has some extended BlackBerry 10 OS demos - While I personally believe BB10 to be way too little, way too late, some still have hope for them. Here is some neat demo video though.
• Verizon might shut down CDMA networks in 2021 - the CDMA network is one of the reason I left Verizon. It is an old standard taht does not match up to the HSDPA of AT&T and T-Mobile. However, the breadth of the network has given them an aura of reliability. As well, they saw the error of their CDMA ways, and jumped feet first into LTE, creating the largest and strongest LTE network in the US. Via The Verge, more here.
