LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/05/12 -- The X PRIZE Foundation and Nokia today announced that finalized competition guidelines have been released and team registration is officially open for the $2.25 million Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE, a global competition to accelerate the development of sensing technologies that capture and interpret information about our health and the surrounding environment that impacts personal health. The competition guidelines detail the prize structure and individual competition prize purses, which are now available at nokiasensingxchallenge.org.
The Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE will be a fixed-date series of two separate and consecutive competitions over two years, with each competition including a qualifying round and a final round, followed by prize awards. Each separate competition prize purse includes a $525,000 Grand Prize and up to five Distinguished Awards, each valued at $120,000.
All eligible submissions will be evaluated by a judging panel which is comprised of highly qualified and impartial members who have cross-functional and relevant expertise in sensing and mobile health technologies. Following the judging process, up to 12 teams will advance to the final round where their entries will be evaluated by both the judging panel and a "crowd panel" consisting of potential consumers. The winners will be the team solutions that demonstrate the highest merit in the areas of accuracy and consistency, demonstration quality, technical innovation, human factors, market opportunity, originality/creativity, and packaging/user experience.
"The intent of the competition structure is to enable our teams to focus on two awards with larger prize amounts and a greater opportunity to become finalists," said Mark Winter, Senior Director, Qualcomm Tricorder X PRIZE and Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE. "We look forward to seeing a rich diversity of sensor and sensing solutions that will help accelerate the growth of the mobile health industry and adoption by consumers."
Sensing will enable a newfound understanding and knowledge about our state of being, which will become more pervasive and magnified as we gain more and more insight. Sensing lays the foundation for a mobile health revolution that will transform healthcare into what it must become: highly personalized and accessible for the unique needs of each individual.
"I look forward to seeing the types of teams that we attract with the revised competition structure and prize awards," said Henry Tirri, PhD, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President, Nokia. "There is a really exciting future for sensing technologies, and that the new categories of intelligent devices, combined with advance sensors, will drastically improve the ability of the individual consumer to collect health-related information. The participating teams in this competition not only have the opportunity to accelerate the use of advanced sensing technology in mobile health, but they will also have a significant role in transforming the lives of billions of people around the world."
Teams participating in the Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE will also have access to an online marketplace, where they can connect with individuals and companies to exchange ideas and resources, as well as attract potential funding opportunities from outside sources.
It is anticipated that the solutions developed as part of the Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE may also be utilized in the $10 million Qualcomm Tricorder X PRIZE, a global competition to put healthcare knowledge in the hands of consumers. Together, these competitions will help create an ecosystem of innovative technologies that radically change the way people understand their state of health -- in desirable, convenient ways not previously available.
