MONROVIA, Calif., Dec. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In its latest project, award-winning creative firm The Pastilla Institute of Design tapped into the vibrant arena of children's literature, providing visual concept direction and illustrations for author Marjan Massoudian's The Tale of Kakamuchu.
The Tale of Kakamuchu is the story of young protagonists Henrite and Shelshala and their clever attempts to thwart the evil dictator Kakamuchu, who has forbidden laughter on their home planet Kaka-La. The power of imagination was of particular significance during Kakamuchu's inception—the character was created during one of Massoudian's many storytelling sessions with her niece and nephews as they played on a backyard swing set.
"One of us would start a story with the first line and then we each would add a sentence or two until our story was complete," explained Massoudian. "Children have an innate love of storytelling and the creative process that craves nurturing -- perhaps even more so in a world where they are inundated with images and information." Wanting to share this creative process with her readers by leaving aspects of Kakamuchu up to their own imaginations, Massoudian asked the Pastilla team to illustrate her story through vivid artwork of the scenery on planet Kaka-La, opting not to incorporate character drawings.
"It was an interesting challenge creating an entire setting for these main characters without any descriptions or visual representation of the characters themselves," said Art Director Ed Rick. Inspired by children's literature, science fiction, and the intricacies of Japanese illustration, Rick and Illustrator Chia-Yi Lin created a lush, brightly colored alien world filled with green forests and fanciful architecture -- a soft, friendly and endearing environment that would engage children.
Throughout the project, "Marjan gave us free reign to create our own unique realm from scratch," said Lin. "Her confidence in our vision and work set the tone for the project as we brought Kakamuchu's universe to fruition."
